The R34 Airship

  • From 10am until 5pm look to the skies for aerial displays, ranging from historic war birds to contemporary military jets.
  • Flight comes to life at this protected First and Second World War airfield. A site steeped in history, in 1919 the R34 Airship took off from East Fortune near Edinburgh on its record-breaking first east-west transatlantic flight. Here visitors will discover some of the most extraordinary machines in the world that reveal the story of our ambition to take to the skies and find out how flight has changed our world.
  • The history of the airfield is detailed in the Fortunes of War exhibition, where you can discover how the airfield has changed with an interactive map and you can also navigate an airship to find the enemy submarines.
  • The parachute store has been recently restored to its original appearance, where parachutes were hung from the ceiling to dry and repacked ready for use.

Aircraft include a de Havilland Dragon, a Harrier jump jet and the Comet, the first jet powered passenger aircraft.
